As long as the media is very open and well draining, it will be harder to overwater.
I would not bottom water. We usually refer to that as "wicking", having the water rise up like a sponge. That leads to the bottom media staying much to wet leading to root rot. Roots will not normally grow down into an overly moist area. It is much more effective to water thoroughly from the top until in really runs out of the drainage holes. You let it go almost dry, and then maybe water again in 5 days or so.
