The dark-green foliage is tough and quite leathery, lasting a year or more, with individual leaves gradually turning colour between October and March. A heavy crop of pea-sized crimson berries appears in pendant clusters. Luckily, their dry appearance seems to save them from foraging birds, which are more usually attracted to shiny, juicier more succulent-looking fruits.
Not surprisingly, a plant of such extensive distribution is seen in varying forms. 'Fructu Luteo' is a selection with yellow fruits; 'Palette' has pinky-tinged leaves streaked creamy-white and is slower growing. Plants from the Salicifolia Group have narrower (willow-like) leaves, while those of the Undulata Group have leaves with a more pronounced wavy margin. There is also a prostrate form which will spread to cover several yards
