The natural wild type Ipomoea nil is a funnel shaped flower, blue colored, and dark green 3 point leaf shape. All the other Ipomoea nil cultivars we grow are mutants from the wild type. The traits you asked about are brought about by various gene mutations. I am not conversant in morning glory genetics; however, I find it fascinating and learn by growing the plants.
