The great thing about plants and gardens is that nothing has to be permanent. I might try a few things in smaller containers and cover them with gravel until it is like you want it to be. I think many containers feature taller, fuller and spilling forms but rules are to be broken. If there ends up being room I like a rock or small piece of wood also. Then if you don't like it a shovel is our best friend.
