If you are heavy with watering, use clay, if you tend to underwater use plastic. The Phalaenopsis will grow in either.
Use a smaller pot when you have very little live root. You choose a pot that will hold the root system snuggly yet comfortably. Never overpot.
Roots climbing out of the pot is natural. Don't trim them or repot because of that.
Phalaenopsis like to be repotted, they recover and grow roots within 2-3 months.
Never grow in double layer pots. Messes up the watering. Once in flower, you can enjoy them where ever you would like to. That is the time to use a decorative container to display it properly.
