I like how you mention that each different wood has its own personality and appearance, also scent. There was a sawmill near my home in the mountains and I used to be able to tell which trees were being processed when I walked past it. It's been so long I'm not sure I could still do that, but in fall I can often smell them better than at other times, just by walking in a forest.
