I believe looks is part of the appeal. I believe the mistaken belief that they are cheaper is also a big part of the appeal. They are cheaper in the short run, but more expensive in the long haul. For me, and this is probably just my experience, the great appeal is that birds like to nest in them. I "stack" my window planters to get more depth. This makes tiny pocket areas that birds love to nest in. Nesting mother birds don't like it when I water. So, I've learned... buy the "self watering" coirs, and double them up inside the planter. That way, you don't have to replace them as often.
