Butterfly weed takes forever, too. I had a variety last year that I almost tossed thinking that it had failed...Found the pot shoved to the side and there was a little plant, yep...butterfly weed:)
I've got some sprouts from my Jan. sowing coming up now. I move them under my salvaged windows leaning against the brick of the house when things get dicey. Stuff like cabbage and poppies tend to fend for themselves.
