We're going to have to rely of the Internet gods to pull someone in from "the land of enchantment" and how to grow tomatoes there. I was talking to someone recently here in south metro-Phoenix who decided poor quality water was a reason for failing tomato crops. Don't know if Las Cruses, NM has the same problem but I'd venture a "yes". Very alkaline in these parts. My friend has recently constructed a rain barrel for collection to water his tomatoes.
“Don't give up too quickly"... unknown, I heard it somewhere.
