And yes, the sand is that bad. It will contain moisture, and accumulate water near the plant stem .

This is what I actually use in about a 30/70 ratio with a cactus soil. I like it because it's heavier than perlite for top heavy plants. Looks more natural too. I think I'll get rid of the sand, thanks for the advice.
