Forget the back, worry about your heart. Snow shoveling is very stressful on the heart, and lots of people have heart attacks when shoveling snow. The physical exertion plus cold temps constricting blood vessels is not a good thing. That activity is for healthy, fit, young people, not those of us at the other end of the age spectrum.
