So far covering the pods has protected mine from deer. I bought a role of tulle from a craft store, cut it into squares and put the square over the pod and fastened with a twist tie. Tulle is the gauzy fabric often used for wedding decorations. Covering also helps preserve any seeds if the pod cracks open before being picked.

Some people use the little tulle gift bags for the same purpose.
