I grow mine where the water drains when the other stuff gets watered. If I had a pond, I would grow them around the edge. I may put one next to the spot where the water comes pouring off the roof, although it is borderline for adequate sun.
Periods of drought will probably not kill it outright, but will result in bud drop, wilting and even early dormancy.
