Allison, if you want to try some EEars on the cheap visit a Spanish market. I bought some Yautia (like a shorter, fatter parsnip) and Malanga. These are Xanthosoma. Some pics here The thread "Growing tropicals in the north" in Tropicals forum
An Asian market might have Taro (Colocasia esculenta) and Alocasia. The Xanthosoma should get bigger for you than me. My largest got to about 5x5' clumps.
