We very rarely get rain in the winter and usually ahead of a cold front (like you say).
We get a VERY occasional frost and then we do have to protect our plants. It happened last year and the year before last, but not this time around (and we're feeling safe here at the end of February!)

You may want to keep yours in pots until they get some size to them.
