Whenever I planted potatoes I always cut the seed potato into thirds or halves making sure there were "eyes" or roots. Then I watched a gardening program about a potato growing expert who explained that he planted the seed potatoes whole. He said if you cut a potato up into pieces you were inviting all sorts of pathogens that could cause lots of diseases. He grew potatoes for a living. I had never had any disease problem that I remember before, but why chance it, so I began using whole potatoes as the seed.
I wonder if letting the cut up potatoes air dry and scab over deters diseases getting into the potato or if the "expert" was full of hooey.
