If you have a properly sized mask, you should not need the filter insert.
I use an unbleached coffee filter cone type ..#4. But not in n95.
My buddy uses a steamer and places her mask in that and steams it .. but she is a home care therapist ( bless her ) and her patients have ALS... so she is protecting them from what she picks up out in the world
I wipe my mask off with an alcohol saturated wipe .. it wets it s hit and then I air dry, when my homemade masks get here ...I will slip those over the n95 and just toss those in the wash ..saving the n95 from so many washes. I only had 2 of those from over a decade ago when I made a pandemic box.. that's where I had a nice jug of alcohol and other stuff waiting for a time like this .. so .. wipe your mask and steam if you can .. and do not put your hands in it, grab it by the elastic and run the elastic through your fingers with a alcohol or Sudsy bleach rag. It's not perfect .. but we do the best we can
