Well, for the record, I came across conflicting information on pansy starting, so I tried some just very lightly covered....and they germinated faster than the ones I covered more heavily. Both were seeds harvested last year. I also came across seed starting information that said they didn't need to be covered at all, just pressed into the soil. But I haven't tried that yet.
