I grow two, here: Dorothea K. Williamson, and Black Gamecock. They grow in an area I "made special" for the beardless irises.....heavy, "peaty" soil, instead of our sand, amended for ph, mulched pretty thickly with pine straw. The La's, and the Ji's actually have a "rubber sheet" buried underneath them (about 16 inches deep), to help keep the moisture from "going down". The 2 that I grow are *supposedly* among the most forgiving, to grow, and I've never tried any other varieties, but, our cold doesn't seem to bother them. Our summers are usually hot, and dry, so, I water that area pretty heavily when it needs it, trying to maintain about 2 inches of "rain"(either "real", or "fake' ).
I suppose you could say mine are planted in a "kids wading pool" Shrug! , sunk to "ground level"
