I was told years ago, to kill invasive tree roots, cut the tree leaving a minimal stump and cover the stump with granular nitrogen, then cover with a waterproof tarp. Leave it for a long time. It worked for me on a 12" diameter Japanese Elm. Rotted the stump away, too.
