I feel it is almost hopeless for health officials, local city and county officials, and governors to make announcements about wearing masks and limiting gatherings. These orders are being widely and publically flouted by groups in all levels of society. No real penalties for doing so. Not only no legal penalties, but also no societal disapproval. In future such disregard for acceptance of the necessity and desirability of social cooperation will result in people disregarding other laws and social norms. To me it seems like a breakdown of a civilized society that will not bode well. Am I being too pessimistic?
