I use the 4" drain pipe to protect all of ours not sure how small your young trees are but it is pretty inexpensive a 100ft roll is somewhere around 40.00 at Lowes or Home depot we use a saw and cut a slit in it and wrap a couple hundred every year and never had a problem yet.
