I think what makes it applique is that the transition from throat to eye or the rest of the bloom is jagged and sometimes splotchy. All throats bleed into the rest of the bloom, but applique seems to be when there's an obvious uneven... jaggedness for lack of a better word.

Normal throat, even though there are parts of the throat that bleed way into the eye.

Betty's INNER SPIRIT - definitely applique because you can't miss that jagged transition into the rest of the bloom
