So, in Boise Idaho right now, it is 37°F when I type this. It's been getting below freezing at night constantly.
I happened to be out looking at my backyard, when I found mushrooms growing on a tree stump and in the ground around the tree stump. Roots are exposed also. You can see them between the bark and the tree stump.
No pun intended, I was stumped. The ground is frozen. It's been getting below freezing at night. These mushrooms shouldn't be growing in my opinion. It's too cold and the ground is frozen. That defies all my knowledge of plants. I thought plants, including mushrooms, had to be warm in order to grow properly. I thought that cold temperatures would retard or stop the growth of plants.
Seeing these things growing in frozen ground defies all my knowledge of gardening. Granted, my knowledge is limited, but I'm very curious to find out what this mushroom is.
Any ideas?
