Larry is correct, but you also have to make sure you have put this little feature on your homepage (you can do this by
customizing your homepage):
If you don't have that on your homepage, you will not be able to see when a new post/reply is made in a watched forum.
After putting that feature on your homepage, you should see something similar to this on the homepage:
