The ARS just came out with an online article on alfalfa, and here are the take-aways:

1. 10-12 c/ of alfalfa/pellets in 32 gal.. plastic garbage can with lid; add water, stir and steep 4-5 day, stirring occasionally.

2. May fortify with 2 c. Epsom salts, 1/2 c. Sequestrene (Sprint 330-chelated iron) or favorite trace element elixir. Tea will start to smell in 3 days; keep the lid on.

3. Use gal. of mix on large bushes, 1/3 that much on minis.

4. Fill up again with water when you reach the bottom of the barrel. One load of meal/pellets can make two barrels of tea, but add more fortifiers for the 2nd barrel.

Someone just donated a mostly full 50 lb. sack of pellets to our little public garden and said anyone could use it for personal use, too, which I just picked up so I may be trying this soon. Any ideal day/night temps to use this at? It still seems a little early to me. It's still daytime 50's, night-time 40's mostly, occasionally warmer in the day as well as dipping cooler at nights. Some rose plants beginning to leaf out, but just as many still dormant, esp. after just being pruned back.
