It's not so much
more ads as targeted ones. Without adblockers or other tools, the advertising platforms can build a profile of your activity and present ads to you that they think you are more likely to click on (as Mac said, $$$$$). There's a fair bit a user can do now to protect one's privacy and stop advertisers tracking you, but you still have to set it up yourself. Firefox is probably the best mainstream browser in that it is slowly implementing these protections by default, whereas Google Chrome is effectively spyware.
If you want a good ad-blocker, I recommend AdNauseum. It hides the ads but also triggers a click on every ad, basically polluting the advertiser's dataset. The advantage is that sites like garden.org should still get support from advertising, but the advertiser won't be able to build a profile of you as easily and you don't have to see the ads.
