It seem when small plants put directly into large pots don't seem to do well for me. When they outgrow the smaller pot, roots coming out the bottom or just showing enough top growth, I will move them up in pot size to the same as the outer pot.
The following applies when the outer pot is buried in the soil: some of these benefits would apply to some extent with double pots to a limited degree even if not buried in the ground.
