Mona, from what I understand you measure at the widest point, so wherever that may be. I would think this is straight across either the petals or the sepals, not petal to sepal since that would mean you would most likely be measuring at an angle.
As Leslie said, use a typical bloom.

Fred or Lyle or Ann or some others who have registered daylilies will be better help.
