Leslie - get thee to Google. If you are growing hostas and don't know about HVX (or Hosta Virus X), you really need to educate yourself.
It is a virus which seems to be specific to hostas. The insidious thing is that it can be in a plant and not show symptoms for several years, or in some cases, ever. And if you don't sterilize your tools when you go from plant to plant, you can spread it. Most reputable hosta nurseries are now testing for the virus and very fussy about where their stock comes from, but if you've purchased from box stores, you may have bought virused plants.

Check http://www.inthecountrygardena... which has symptoms and some pictures

The Hosta Library pages are some of the better ones - http://www.hostalibrary.org/fi...

Google it and you'll find more. Join the Hallson list and there's a whole forum about HVX.
