Hi Monica,
In this case, you could submit a proposal to move all the images from the invalid ones over to the valid one (Ruellia simplex). Once that's done, you would submit a proposal to delete all the invalid ones and then edit the name for Ruellia simplex to include the synonyms.
That's a few steps there, but I don't think there's a more streamlined process for that at this time.
