I don't know what the soil is like - but you can amend it to suit your choice of plants.
That's not a great view of the house, what I can see of it; could use a splash of colour and some texture to soften that corner. In a sunny spot, I'd say, hollyhocks, but that looks a quite shady area. Big tree, of just the wrong time of day?
If it's in shade most of the time, hostas do sound like a good suggestion: they grow big and lush and the foliage comes in lots of interesting variations. They tend to fill in all available space; hard to companion with anything more timid, and their architecture is limited. There are softer-looking leafy plants, not so big and easier to mix.
Another strong possibility is ferns - but I'd put something taller and colourful behind them by the wall. Astilbes? Foxglove? Hydrangea? Could be a plant-stand with a pot of annuals on it - different every year, or a hanging basket above, or even a narrow trellis with, say, climbing hydrangea, sweet pea or bleeding heart?
The possibilities!
Behind every opportunity is a disaster in waiting.
