Many thanks for the info! I don't think the wands on mine have browned at all yet, so they probably aren't far enough along. I brought the plants in temporarily because I had them shading some crossandra plants, which I hope to dig out of the grow bag and put under my grow lights.
We just got our first killing frost this week, which is rather unusual for us here in zone 5. It finished off all my tree dahlias right when they were on the verge of blooming. But I figure that, if I save the tubers and start them from those--rather than seed--next year, they might shoot up fast enough to manage a few flowers. (We gardeners never learn!) Actually, though, the foliage is pretty enough for me to want to grow them even if they don't bloom.
