Broken colours are variably expressed. At least one group of them, such as for 'Augie's Unique Beauty' are probably caused by "jumping genes" or transposable elements. Whether other daylilies with broken colours are also produced by "jumping genes" or some other mechanism is difficult to decide. For 'Augie's Unique Beauty' probably one in four of the appropriate chromosome has the necessary gene. That means only some of its seedlings will have a chance of showing the broken pattern. However, that assumes the daylily that it was crossed with will produce seedlings that can show the broken pattern. Crossing it with a red-flowered partner will reduce the chance of seeing any broken patterns that might happen.

With patterns the best chance of getting patterned seedlings is when both parents are patterned. However, that does not mean that crossing a patterned daylily to an eyed daylily cannot produce eyed seedlings. It will also depend on the colour of the eye. It will also depend on the ancestry of the eyed partner.

In any case, if the seedlings do not show what you would like then crossing the seedlings with each other or back to the desired parent can provide a more desired result - assuming that enough seedlings are produced.

The number of seedlings produced is always very important, especially with tetraploid crosses and especially if the desired seedling characteristic has a low chance of being present. In a tetraploid cross of a perfectly recessive characteristic AAaa x AAaa as few as 1/36 seedlings may be aaaa. To have a 50:50 chance of finding at least one such seedling about 25 seedlings need to be grown.
