Jim its a good rule but as long as you keep a good eye on them you can use plastic. i have a lot in plastic also and its a pain in the rainy season but i have had to bring under cover or even re-pot with a dryer potting mix. They just require more TLC and if you worried about the looks as many are plastic are less money with color or pottery that looks nice are very expensive.
