On a different forum a member with a lot of experience growing Aloes of all varieties said that one thing all Aloe trees have in common is that they need to be grown in the ground to thrive. Obviously, you can start them of in pots, but as Baja already mentions there comes a point when no matter what you do it will start to be cranky.

Maybe a bonsai approach can keep a plant like ramosissimum looking great at that size for a lot longer, but it is probably the only Aloe tree that this may work with, just because of its already relatively small leaves and multi-branched nature.
It is what it is!
