Evan,
As far as I know, the plant sold as Alocaisa odora 'California' and Alocasia gageana are the identical plant, at least in nurseries selling the plant in south Florida. Now IMHO A. gageana may well be a sport of A. odora, and that sport may well have been discovered in California, but without a published reference, who really knows? In my breeding work I have seen concrete evidence that this is indeed the case, but until someone does a DNA analysis and publishes the results, the specific status of the plant will remain as is. If there is any information out there about the origin of A. gageana or A. odora 'Callifornia', I'd love to have the opportunity to study it.
