Scott, re Brunnera: I've maintained a number of cultivars over years. Found the species, M. macrophylla a very bad runner (apparently it seeds in optimal conditions) and got rid of it. The one problem cultivar, for me, has been Brunnera 'Alexander's Great', a terrible seeder here, with almost all seedlings being degenerate. So far, I've just dug them all out. I never had a seeding problem with my Brunnera cultivars until 'Alexander's Great' was planted.
The one earlier spring flowerer I have, which regularly gets cross-pollinated (by bumblebees) is Pulmonaria. With a dozen or so Pulmonaria cultivars, in a relatively small area, it's necessary to keep on top of removing seedlings which appear spaced, throughout the garden, yearly.
