Elaine, Stanhopea blooms are very short lived, mostly only 3 days, so they really "put out" ! The buds all open at the same time and many times you can smell them the night before opening. I have never, ever come across a nasty smell on any of them, I find the opposite is true, they smell great! Stanhopea wardii blooms are strongly and most wonderfully scented! This embreei smells somewhat fruity and very very pleasant.
Perhaps you were thinking of some of the Bulbos? And even those are not all evil stinkers.

If you want a chocolate scented Encyclia, look for Enc phoenicea!

About these ice cubes! What utter nonsense. Who ever started that garbage should be shot.
