Since I live in Florida where it gets really hot and the media dries too fast during our dry season my media has more potting soil than recommended. But for your area, you probably will need any fast draining medium. Desert roses do not like getting wet feet.
So mostly you would want the cactus/succulent potting mix (with no peat moss) with a mixture of pumice or perlite or coarse sand. This way the water will drain fast. (I told my sister in law in Michigan to keep it simple to just get a professional bonsai mix with no potting soil, because she has to grow hers indoor most of the time.) Desert roses cannot be outside when temps drop 50 below. Their stem or root would rot fast. They have similar care to me as my succulents.
