Last year I used plastic netting with the square holes approx 1" Used the typical peony rings with a grid on top, placed bamboo poles within the ring and tied the plastic grid loosely to the stakes. The grid rode with the peony buds and when it reached what I considered its height, I secured the grid to the poles.
Worked really well in the rain for the large flowers, did not get to it this year.
