Accepting the fact of being a hypocrite, this year, I have worn shoes in the garden more often than I have gone bare foot.
Partly because I can take them off and not track dirt into either house, and partly due to working in a garage at home with items you do not want to step on on the floor but MOSTLY because I have two pair of old black tennis type shoes at home, with nice airy holes, that I can slip on and off without bending over when I go into the house so as to not track dirt.

Of course this was after looking at the kitchen floors in either house and thinking a herd of muddy cattle has just wandered through. Whistling
