I also use a sharpie on plastic tags and will now switch to a paint pen. I will also make a written record of where each daylily is located just in case. But does anyone have a better method for marking the daylilies in the garden?
My method for marking daylilies starts with 1/2" plastic/PVC or similar pipe (normally used for plumbing) cut into 12" lengths by the hardware store where I buy it. The pipe is cream-colored so I wrap the cut pieces with 2" wide brown plastic tape from the dollar store. Then I print the plants' IDs onto a sheet of 2" x 2 1/2" Water Resistant and Tear Resistant Avery #6578 labels, using my laser printer, and wrap each label around the upper part of a 12" pipe, so that the edges of the label overlap. I pound the pipe into the ground so that a minimum amount of the pipe shows but the label can be read. The laser printing does not fade and remains easy to read year after year. My example shows a lot of dirt on the label. I could easily clean it off but I don't want to. The dirt helps the bright white labels to blend in better.
