I also only buy generic ink cartridges for my Canon Pixma (I would for any brand printer). They're all ridiculously expensive for their own brand name ink cartridges, it's not just Canon. I don't do much printing, only documents when I do, so the majority of my ink simply dries up from just sitting there, and that's wasteful enough without spending a fortune on the ink.
Before I buy a printer, I first check on prices on their ink and if generics are available. And I'll buy the generics wherever I find them cheapest, either eBay or even Amazon at times.
