Yes, shorter and more sturdy stemed. I'm not a supporter of watering much at all--only in dire circumstances (I call it being on life support). I am a very, very strong believer in heavy mulching and this summer, my mulching really served me well. It kept my soil temperature down too! I think it got up to 78' F one day but most of the time it runs between 66-73. But I will water about 10 days before blooming if they need it and again soon after blooming if it's dry. Luckily, I got 2.12 inches of rain overnight Wednesday here over a nine hour period--a real good soaker so that is just what the lilies needed and the timing is perfect for the bulb growth. But, leading up to this point, all of us here in the Midwest will tell you this summer has been a real stinker and something else to deal with. And not everybody got that rain that I got, so I am very, very lucky! What a feeling!
