Connie, my summertime mulch is wood chips--can't use those in winter here as they eventually freeze together and form a layer of wood chips in ice, literally. In the winter I use fresh cut pine boughs with a generous amount of oak leafs sprinkled over them. This mix also catches and traps drifting snow. All together, this provides probably more insuluation than I actually need but better to be safe than sorry.
