Peony mascula makes both but the 'duds' are actually gorgeous (see red ones below)
The usually small infertile red or black seeds are just empty which is why I always squeeze gently all the seeds I sow
P. mascula is a short plant so situated at the front of a bed it makes quite a statement in the Fall when the pods open, and the seeds are so 'glued in' that they will stay there for weeks
