you probably aren't taking the prolifs too soon if the scapes are brown or there are some good roots. Not all of mine will scape before I take them. The ones that are scaping, the scapes they are on are still nice and green. Then I have the ones that are all brown and dying before the prolif gets roots. I just plant them anyway, they may live and they may not.
