Sue, I didn't mean the shops are illegal. Johnson's is a regular nursery and their hydroponics selection is basic trays with water. The hydroponics shop I visited in Louisville KY (http://www.newearth.com/) had whole pop-up rooms with proper ventilation, motorized track lighting, special fans and meters, the whole shebang. Awesome selection. All the cloning material you could want. We have nothing like that here. I bought clay media, BAP hormone, oasis cubes and the store brand starter plugs and some more liquid minerals and flew it home with me. Both my carry on and my checked bags were searched thoroughly, and I politely answered questions, and went on my way.
The legal and political climate in Kansas is very very different from California. People here who grow anything questionable will buy anonymously on the internet, so that takes away the biggest customer base for local hydroponics sales. There just aren't enough people wanting to start seeds or grow tomatoes indoors to justify keeping good systems in stock. Cloning chemicals are hard to come by in most states, with reason.
Remember that children, marriages, and flower gardens reflect the kind of care they get.
