I'm so sorry for the loss of your cat, and that you can't have another one right now. That would make me sad too.
There's really no substitute for a good mouser for keeping the rodents out.
Always remember that your worth is not measured by your "usefulness". Some people may try to tell you otherwise, but it simply is not true. Know this in your heart.
Not to start a war, but it sounds like your husband has not been very "useful" in keeping the mice away!
